Texas A&M Chancellor Glenn Hegar said Monday that the university system will take disciplinary action after an undercover video showed a professor using the “gender unicorn” in a classroom lecture on how and when to teach children about gender identity.
Mr. Hegar said it was “unacceptable for the Texas A&M faculty to push a personal political agenda,” adding that the professor’s course materials on transgenderism, including the “gender unicorn,” were “irreconcilable with the values of The Texas A&M University System.”
“I will work with the Board of Regents to make sure that the A&M System takes the disciplinary action necessary to ensure this does not happen again at one of our campuses,” he said in a Monday statement.
His comments came hours after Texas state Rep. Brian Harrison posted an undercover video showing an unnamed student challenging a professor during a lesson on gender ideology in a class on children’s literature.
The student told the professor that the lesson violated President Trump’s executive order recognizing only two sexes.
After a brief debate, the professor told the student to leave.
Mr. Harrison, a Republican, also sent a letter Monday to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott asking him to fire both the unnamed professor and Texas A&M President Mark Welsh.
Mr. Harrison said the class’s instruction materials included statements such as “childhood is a time to figure out how to be a boy, girl, man, woman, or another gender” and that “children and adolescents are expected to be sexless, even as our culture valorizes, idealizes, and even eroticizes youth.”
“The whistleblower went to President Welsh, whose indefensible response was to defend the teacher, state that he will not consider firing her, and defend the decision for Texas A&M to teach this material because it was needed training for future public school administrators,” said the letter.

Mr. Harrison wasn’t satisfied with the chancellor’s response, calling it a “Nice first draft.”
“You know what’s MISSING from this statement?: ‘The Texas A&M President, Department Head, and Professor have been fired, and all DEI and LGBTQ activities and instruction have been terminated,’” Mr. Harrison said on X. “Try again!”
Mr. Harrison also sent letters to Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. asking their respective federal departments to investigate.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon called the situation “deeply concerning” in a Monday post on X, adding that the Justice Department’s civil rights division “will be looking into this.”
The “gender unicorn,” an instructional guide published by Trans Student Educational Resources, teaches children that there are at least three types of gender identity – male, female, and “other gender(s)” – as well as various kinds of gender expression.
In his statement, Mr. Hegar said that Texas A&M should “prioritize protecting children and not engaging in indoctrination.”
“Early investigations appear to indicate that the professor who taught this course failed to comply with clear instructions to align course descriptions with course materials,” the chancellor said. “Further findings reveal that this failure continues to be an issue with this professor.”
Rep. Chip Roy, Texas Republican, said on X: “Important thread. We have more work to do in Texas.”
